CANOE CAMP
Program Description
Sultana
Projects’ Canoe Camp is a terrific program for young paddlers (ages 8 –
11) looking to explore the great outdoors. Each day begins at Wilmer
Park in Chestertown, Maryland, where participants meet the staff to play
environmentally-themed games and look at maps to determine where that
day’s paddle will take place. Campers then board a 15-passenger van
towing a mobile canoe rig and travel to a put-in site on a local
waterway. Once underway aboard canoes, students spend most of the day
learning basic paddling skills, exploring creeks and marshes, pulling
seine nets to sample marine life, beachcombing, and swimming.
When time
permits, afternoons are spent fishing with a hook and line, catching
critters with hand nets, taking nature hikes, and visiting local County
Stores to purchase popsicles. This is the ultimate way for children to
experience all of the qualities that make the Eastern Shore such a
special place!
New to Canoeing?
No previous
paddling experience is required for children to participate in Sultana
Projects’ Canoe Camp. The program is run by three experienced staff
members that will work with each child to provide basic paddling and
safety instruction. On the water, younger paddlers will have a staff
member in the back of their canoe at all times, while older paddlers
will be required to stay in close proximity to the instructors’ vessels.
All paddling sites are located on protected waterways featuring sandy
beaches or other points of interest where participants can get out of
their boats to explore, swim, relax, and have fun. Sultana Projects uses
14’6” Old Town canoes that are specifically designed for maximum
stability and easy maneuverability.
