Sultana Projects is dedicated to teaching students of all ages about the history and environment of the Chesapeake Bay. The organization has a full-time, year-round staff of seven and a seasonal staff (March - November) of up to 16. Seasonal Educational Staff on the Schooner Sultana

 

CHIEF MATE: Sultana Projects is currently seeking a Chief Mate for the schooner SULTANA for our 2012 sailing season. Employment for this position begins in late February and can continue through mid-August or, ideally, through the end of the season in November. During the 2012 season, SULTANA will travel the full length of the Chesapeake Bay, visiting numerous ports in both Maryland and Virginia. SULTANA will work with over 4,500 students and teachers doing educational day sails as well as week long live aboard programs. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. A minimum 50 ton Inland license is required. Applicants should have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crew members work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk on board the schooner as well as space in SULTANA’s crew apartment in downtown Chestertown, Maryland.

EDUCATION DIRECTOR: Sultana Projects is seeking an on board Education Director for the schooner SULTANA for our 2012 sailing season. In addition to being an active member of the crew, the Education Director is responsible for the daily implementation of our award winning educational program onboard the vessel. During the 2012 season, SULTANA will visit numerous ports in Maryland and Virginia and work with over 4,500 students and teachers doing educational day sails as well as week long live aboard programs.  Employment for this position begins in March and can continue through mid-August or, ideally, through the end of the season in November. Employment for these positions begins in March and continues through either mid-August or mid-November. Seasonal Educational Staff for Paddling Programs

 

PADDLING PROGRAM PAID INTERN: Sultana Projects is currently seeking a qualified individual to work as the Summer Intern with the 2012 Chesapeake Adventures’ Kayak Trips and Canoe Camps. This person will work closely with the Program Director and Co-Leader to help guide four separate week-long kayak programs for middle school students that take place on tidal tributaries of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  When week-long trips are not scheduled, the instructor will co-lead day trips on canoes that take place primarily on the Chester and Sassafras Rivers.

 

Responsibilities for this position include assisting with trip planning and logistical troubleshooting, teaching basic paddling skills, setting up/breaking down camping equipment, purchasing and preparing basic camping food, leading evening activities and land-based games, loading and unloading paddling gear, and co-leading daily paddles with students. Applicants should have significant paddling expertise and experience working with children. Familiarity with the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem would be a plus. CPR, First Aid, and lifeguarding certifications preferred. This position begins on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 and runs through Monday, August 13, 2012. Posted December 2011
