Participating Counties
In order to emphasize the physical importance that the Chesapeake Bay has played in the history of the United States, “Roots of a Nation” will partner school systems from opposite shores of the Chesapeake representing two distinct and historically important regions of Maryland: 1) Southern Maryland, characterized by its strong links to tobacco culture as well as key tactical sites for the War of 1812 (represented by Calvert and St. Mary’s counties), and 2) Maryland’s Eastern Shore, a region rich in Colonial History and distinctive for its tidewater landscape (represented by Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties). For thousands of years the inhabitants of these two regions were closely linked by the Chesapeake Bay, which served as a waterbased highway for vessels involved in both commerce and conflict. Ironically, the advent of the automobile and the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the past century have only served to separate these two historically connected regions. By purposefully incorporating school systems from both sides of the Chesapeake, “Roots of a Nation” will make the physical presence of the Bay an integral component for all of its programs.
