Program Partners

 

Four programming partners are developing and implementing the course of study for the “Roots of a Nation” initiative. These partners were selected because of their expertise in the program’s four principal content areas and their demonstrated track record of incorporating innovative approaches to teaching and learning. The four programming partners for “Roots of a Nation” include:

 

1. C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College: Washington College’s C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience is an academic institute dedicated to innovative, cross-disciplinary approaches to American History and culture. The C.V. Starr Center’s director, Adam Goodheart, and his staff have a particular expertise in content and programs related to Slavery and the Civil War.

 

2. Center for the Environment & Society at Washington College: Washington College’s Center for the Environment and Society brings the unique perspective of a staff with a strong background in archeology and anthropology. The Center’s Director, Dr. John Seidel, has extensive expertise and related field experiences pertaining to Native American History and European Settlement.

 

3. Calvert Marine Museum: The Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland, is one of the Chesapeake region’s premier cultural institutions. For the next three years, the museum’s educational programs, overseen by Deputy Director Sherrod Sturrock, will highlight the War of 1812 and its upcoming 200th anniversary. Sturrock has organized an impressive list of scholars and authors to participate in a variety of War of 1812 related seminars for “Roots of a Nation.”

 

4. Sultana Projects, Inc.: Sultana Projects is an award-winning, non-profit educational organization that provides programming for more than 10,000 students and teachers each year under the auspices of the Maryland State Department of Education. Sultana Projects has a successful trackrecord of providing professional development programs to teachers related to the Revolutionary War period and European Settlement. The primary classroom for the organization is a full-scale replica of the 1768 schooner Sultana, a vessel used historically by the Britain’s Royal Navy to enforce the “Tea Taxes” in the years preceding the American Revolution.
